Carlsbad AI startup Ezoic gets $33M, plans to hire 40 more people

A startup in Carlsbad just got a big infusion of cash in one of the largest San Diego tech deals so far this quarter. The company, called Ezoic, is using the money to expand its team of engineers rapidly.

The company makes a software tool for companies who publish digital content, from small indie bloggers to big mass media companies like Hearst, which publishes Cosmopolitan, Popular Mechanics and Marie Claire, among others.

Tyler Bishop, the company’s chief marketing officer, said the startup took off in 2016 and is racing it keep up with its growth. Three years ago, Ezoic only employed about a dozen people. Today, they employ roughly 100 and plan to reach 140 by the end of the third quarter.

“We’re hiring for every position you can think of,” Bishop said, although most of the new jobs are for developers. “We’re almost always hiring engineers.”

Ezoic has a host of software tools that help publishers maximize their ad revenue, boost their SEO performance, and smartly target demographics that are likely to buy whatever it is the company is selling.

Ezoic is partnered with Google, which allows the startup to dig into how publishers are performing on the search engine and what might be tripping up their traffic or ad performance.

The company recently moved into a new 20,000 square-foot office in Carlsbad, loaded with startup-friendly gear: kombucha, ping-pong tables, a gym and showers. Bishop said they’re hoping the new digs will help them recruit staff.
